About MLK Day of Service 2009
On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January
19, 2009, volunteers have the
opportunity to strengthen their community
and bridge social barriers by participating
in a revitalization project at P.S. 33 in
Jersey City. Volunteers will join
students, teachers, parents and community
members to participate in various projects including:
-
Painting murals in the library, gym and
various classrooms
-
Leading Financial Literacy workshops
(curriculum provided)
-
Managing learning stations to teach
students about Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. including "I Have a Dream" mobiles
and Peace Bingo
Registration
Both teams and individuals are
welcome to participate. Upon arrival,
volunteers will have the opportunity to sign
up for the project of their choice. Project
selection is on a first come-first serve
basis and will happen on the morning of the
event. We strongly encourage you to
volunteer in advance of the day.

Can I pick the project I want to do...Project
selection will happen on the morning of the
project at the school. Arrive early if you
prefer a specific activity.
Can I bring my kids...Volunteers
ages 4+ are welcome to participate.
Volunteers under the age of 12 will have
specific designated activities. Volunteers
under
the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by
their parent or guardian in order to
participate. Waivers will be available on
www.jerseycares.org after December 1,
2008

What if it rains/snows...The event is
indoors however, due to the
time of year, please check the Jersey
Cares website in the event of a snow storm.
Can I receive service hours credit if I'm
a student...Yes, just email
info@jerseycares.org after the project
and we'll send you a letter.
Is there a cost to participate...No,
this event is open to the public and free of
charge but in an effort to help offset our
supply costs, we encourage volunteers to
bring a spare paint brush or other painting
supplies!
Will there be food...No, please bring
snacks if you would like.
What should I wear...Volunteers
should wear clothes they would not mind
getting dirty.

lectures and dialogues stirred the concern
and sparked the conscience of a generation.
The movements and marches he led brought
significant changes
in the fabric of American life through his
courage and selfless devotion. This devotion
gave direction to thirteen years of civil
rights activities. His charismatic
leadership inspired men and women, young and
old, in this nation and around the world.
