Disaster Recovery: Jersey Shore Home Restoration

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy many individuals are recovering from the disaster and faced with the difficulty of cleaning up their homes and neighborhoods. You can help your neighbors restore their communities and rebuild their lives. Join us!

Volunteers support local residents in various projects managed by Jersey Cares Project Coordinators (Volunteer Leaders). It's not possible to be specific about what you will do each day because needs change frequently, know that your time will be well spent and addressing current recovery needs.

You will be matched to a project based on your skill, it's important to know we are not a rebuild organization and we do not provide training on how to install drywall, mudding or painting. If your availability and skill matches the current workload we will connect you to the right opportunity.

When you arrive at the Jersey Cares Volunteer Reception Center (VRC). You will be greeted by a Project Coordinator who will provide your assignment for the day. After you are deployed you will drive your own vehicle to the volunteer site. Sites are in Ocean County only, please arrive on time and prepared to receive your overview and training. We understand if you need to leave early but always show up on time.

If you register with a team, it's likely you will not volunteer together, although we will do our best to accomodate your need. Be prepared to split up and reconvene at the end of the day for a debrief. We typically deploy five volunteers per site.

Volunteers who sign up for this project will support in the following ways:
  • Home revitalization and rebuilding projects, such as installing drywall.
  • Home Gutting or Interior Demolition.
  • Home Rising Tasks - such as packing and moving personal items.
  • General Labor Tasks.
Here are a few critical items to note before you volunteer with us at this project:

  • Bring your own personal protection equipment. Work gloves, N95 facemask, work boots, eye goggles, long sleeves and long pants. (No sandals or flip-flops).
  • You must provide your own source of food and water when volunteering. We suggest bringing a bagged lunch.
  • We recommend you leave your personal belongings at home or in your vehicle.
Registration cut-off time is 72 hours. If you do not sign up 72 hours in advance you may not volunteer. This will allow us to effectively plan for your arrival. Also take note this opportunity is closed on Sunday, Monday, Holidays and other various dates. If you do not see this project listed on a specific calendar date, then we are not receiving volunteers during that time.

If you are unable to attend you must deregister at the site. We communicate to families in advance the number of people coming to assist and if you don't show, we are unable to assist in their recovery.

If you have a community group interested in volunteering please call the Jersey Cares Office at 973-424-1091. We will assist you further with registration steps and guidelines, please ask for Antwone at ext. 24.
