Lights On in Newark

Connect with the human spirit and jump into the fun at the same time. You can uplift and enrich a young person's life through the art of conversation, interaction, informal mentoring, and more. West Side High School in Newark's West Ward presents Lights On, a program that keeps students engaged in activities so they are safe and off the streets.

Lights On appeals to a variety of student interests including arts, sports, music, video/board games and other exciting opportunities. Volunteers are needed to work with the students and help guide the myriad of activities that exist. At the core of this experience, however, is to join in on the fun!

Some Activities Include:

  • Youth Check-In & Registration

  • Meal Service (preparing and serving)

  • Donation Management (unpacking and sorting)

  • Game Time - checkers, chess, Jenga, Boggle, easel games, X-box, foosball. etc.

  • Sports / Physical Fitness - basketball, yoga, etc. 

  • Beauty / Fashion - henna, make-up artistry, clothing design.

Know Before You Go:

  • If you want to participate in informal mentoring you must sign up and attend four or more consecutive occurrences. 

  • Please arrive 5 minutes earlier than the scheduled time to go through security.

  • Bring your ID (Driver's License, State ID card, etc.)

  • Onsite parking is available on the right side of the school at the front entrance. 


Volunteer Guidelines: COVID-19

  • Please follow masking guidelines as set by federal, state, and local governments. Individual organizations may still require masks to be worn. 

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

  • Clean and wash your hands before, during, and after volunteering for a minimum of 20 seconds.

  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Waivers: All projects have non-negotiable age restrictions that are noted on the upper right side of each project description. If you meet the age restriction but are under 18, please have a parent or legal guardian complete the required youth waiver and bring with you to the project. Adults attending the project can expedite the registration process by printing the adult waiver in advance, sign and bring with you.
