Lights On in Newark
Connect with the human spirit and jump into a lot of excitement at the same time. You can uplift and enrich a young person's life through the art of conversation, interaction, mentoring, and more. West Side High School, a school in Newark's westward, provides a Lights On program that keeps students engaged in activities so they are safe and off the streets. Lights On appeals to a variety of student interests including arts, sports, music, video/board games and other exciting opportunities. Volunteers are needed to work with the students and help guide the myriad of activities that exist. At the core of this experience, however, is to join in on the fun, impart what you know and can do, all the while learning a great deal along the way.
Some Activities Include:
Game Time - checkers, chess, Jenga, Boggle, easel games, etc.
Sports/Physical Fitness - basketball, track, yoga, weightlifting, etc.
Beauty/Fashion - henna tattooing, make-up application, eyebrow waxing, and threading, clothes design
*Ideal volunteers are those who have some experience in the activities mentioned (particularly with beauty & fashion), however, we encourage all prospective volunteers to come and make a difference. We encourage volunteers to interact with the children through an informal success coach training, by enlightening the children on ways to enter college and professional careers.
We also ask that volunteers DO NOT use the supplies and resources intended for the children.
