St. John's Soup Kitchen mission is to support people in need to live with dignity in the community. Inspired by the Spirit of Christ, St. John’s family seeks to serve persons who struggle with mental health issues, addictions, homelessness, and poverty in the City of Newark. We seek to provide support for this community through addressing the developmental requirements of individuals in need. St. John’s is famous not only as a historic site, but also for its good works provided to the community: over 6,000,000 breakfasts and dinners have been served to hungry people, free exhibits are held for struggling artists and the city’s school children, and thousands of toys and books are distributed to other churches and charitable institutions at Christmas. In the past two years, St. John's has opened a Medical Services Unit staffed by a full-time nurse and two volunteer doctors, and a separate Women and Children’s Center where they can eat in peace and safety. In addition, a weekly food pantry is ran, handing out over 100 bags of food to assist those in need.
