Josephine’s Place is a store-front drop-in center, founded 20 years ago for women and by women. Located in the heart of Elizabeth NJ, over 90% of the women we serve are recent immigrants, many of whom speak very little English. It is not uncommon that the women we serve are experiencing loss, poverty, mental illness, and in some cases, instances of abuse. Compounding these struggles, the majority of our women face economic insecurity because they are limited to low-wage employment prospects. In an effort to empower them, we provide English as a Second Language (ESL) courses to teach our women English so that they are better equipped to navigate the systems of their new home. Josephine's Place requires that all volunteers are female.
