Earth Keepers In Newark (West Side High School)
At West Side High School, the environmental science and culinary arts classes utilize the school's diverse gardens to enhance hands-on learning. These gardens include 50 fruit trees, over 50 raised beds, a composting system, and a small flock of hens. The school invites volunteers to help maintain the gardens, offering a relaxed and enjoyable environment for anyone looking to contribute.
Volunteer tasks include mulching, building raised beds, planting seedlings, and weeding. The school appreciates all the volunteer support it receives.
NEED-TO-KNOW

Wear - Closed-toed footwear (no sandals or open-toed shoes), Comfortable, durable clothes (you’ll get dirty), A hat for sun protection and water to stay hydrated

Parking and Entrance - Park in the back of the school and meeting spot usually takes place outside, depending on the work day.

There will be light lifting (up to 30 lbs), standing, kneeling, and stretching opportunities for rest are available during the workday

Work will be rescheduled in case of rain or inclement weather

Waivers: All projects have non-negotiable age restrictions that are noted on the upper right side of each project description. If you meet the age restriction but are under 18, please have a parent or legal guardian complete the required youth waiver and bring with you to the project. Adults attending the project can expedite the registration process by printing the adult waiver in advance, sign and bring with you.
