Opportunity Details

Mentoring and Enrichment in Elizabeth

We are seeking volunteers to spend time with students who are recent immigrants and refugees. Students will range from middle school to high school in need of continued academic support. Take advantage of this opportunity to help non-native English-speaking citizens, at IRC (International Rescue Committee), a worldwide organization whose main focus is the inclusion of immigrants and refugees.
Need-To-Know

  • Bring your government-issued identification.
  • 4-hour metered street parking is limited and available at a nominal cost.
  • NJ-Transit will drop off right outside the building.
  • Prior to our arrival students are working on art projects from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM. If you previously participated in the brief orientation, you will be invited to connect with the students on their art, before the homework session begins.
  • When you arrive, enter the glass doors on the left, walk straight ahead and around the left corner, use the elevator to the 4th floor. Upon entrance to the International Rescue office, state you are volunteering with the Jersey Cares team.
  • While not required, these are some of the languages the students speak - other than English. However, they all speak good English.  (French, Swahili, Arabic, Dari, Pashto)
  • Volunteers will receive a brief orientation upon arrival

Quick Tips
  • Ask the child what they know. Ask them to point out words or numbers they understand and tell you what they mean.
  • Ask the child what they think. Find out what kinds of conversations they are having in school about the concept, and how they feel about it.
  • Find out what parts are tough. You can isolate your tutoring to the parts the student needs the most help.
  • Teaching others is also learning. Ask the child to teach you how to do a certain process. When they get stuck, work on the next step together.
  • Use your resources. Model how to look things up on the internet together. Ask them what steps they would use to find out more about the concept.
  • Get help from others. Find someone else in the room, whether a student or tutor and ask them to guide you.
